Window Painting

by Jeffrey Lewis

My favorite medium to paint on is old thrown-away windows. When I paint on an old piece of junk that has already been thrown away, the ruthless inside committee of editors and critics usually shuts up for a while, hopefully long enough for me to get something useful done. All my wise writer and artist friends remind me that the critics and editors need to stay OUT of the room when the words or the paints are flowing. That's when we're free to open up and paint something we'd like to see more of when we look outside.

In the Book of Common Prayer there's a phrase in the liturgy for ordination called the Presentation:

"Let the whole world see and know that that the things that were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new...." That's how I feel these days.
