Hurricane Island

hurricane island - 36x48

April 2021

Thirty years ago I went to teach at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Maine. It was probably (besides marrying Susan, whom I met at Outward Bound) the most positively consequential decision of my life. I painted this one FAST when we were living in Newport and was a little homesick for Maine.

It’s the view from the Morning Meeting Rock where we always began our days with silence, poetry and music while looking out at Heron Neck and Greens Island. I took some artistic liberty with the size and proximity of the islands across the water, but somehow it feels right to me. I look at this painting every day like medicine.
